If you have been watching the news at all it’s no surprise that you would have heard that second life has banned gambling in their virtual world.
It was stated “because there are a variety of conflicting gambling regulations around the world,” and there is no clear regulations that it was better safe than sorry. Robin Linden, senior vice president for community said “… It was a business decision.”
So now it comes as no surprise that gambling is not gone from second life. It has only changed it’s form. “Gaming still goes on here, oh yes, virtual speakeasies are popping up all over,” said Mr. Rockin, a Second Life resident who didn’t want his first name used. It appears the residents of second life still want to partake in the now illegal activity.
Love it or hate it, second life is here to stay. They have certainly made a place for themselves in the digital world.
But, as I see it with the community behind them this could have been a milestone for all Virtual worlds. I think there is a case to be made that an online virtual world can be governed by it’s own laws. If what you are striving for is a paradigm shift for online communities then someone must be the catalyst for change. I understand the stability of your company is one thing, but this doesn’t seem like a vote for community to me.

2Moons looks to be one of the leading free online RPG’s in the field. Starting off with an initial silent launch the game servers were filled up. Another server was quickly brought online to meet the demand of eager players.
Poised as one of the few Adult, hardcore player niche games with the tagline “No mercy for the weak, no pity for the dying, no tears for the slain.” The response has certainly been overwhelming, so it will be shown how this game can hold up.
Totally free to download and free to play is something that is fairly new to the western market. This price model has been successful in the Asian MMO market. Acclaim supports this in many ways with advertising and in-game items sales. “Within a few weeks after Open Beta, the 2Moons Shop will be opened. Players will be able to use Acclaim Coins to purchase all-new optional game items designed to enhance game play. Items in the shop will allow certain players to access special items, customizable clothing, and other unique game enhancements. New items will be released regularly to keep the shop constantly loaded with fresh additions.”

The launch of the new guildwars expansion is gaining traction and the forums are full of buzz. To showcase the new release NCSoft is offering a sneak peak for all pre-order customers. For 72 hours you can have all access to the new content, and here’s the kicker you get to keep it when the game goes live.

Free Online RPGs – The trend of free.

The rise of free online rpgs is great. I personally love any rpg elements that games have build into them. And of course free is very compelling when it comes to games online.
A recent article outlining upcoming game Fury shows a great model for implementing free game play. “Essentially the game will be free to play with regular free content updates. However, there is also an option to subscribe which offers additional benefits and choice.”
This seems to follow the model of a lot of free online games. Free base play is included, and then a subscription for extra content. The subscription fee after the first month will be USD 9.95.
Tony Hilliam, Auran CEO, explains, “FURY is a game that blends elements from different genres; the pace and adrenaline rush from FPS games; the depth of character customization from RPGs; and the social and virtual economy aspects from MMOs”
Fury is currently in Beta. The game will be released in Q4 2007.
